How to Enable Dark Mode on Zimmwriter Mac OS

Introduction

Dark mode is a popular way to enhance the UX of any app, including Zimmwriter. Although this app does not have an official dark mode feature, you can still activate dark mode by using certain registry tricks. This guide provides instructions on how to enable dark mode in Zimmwriter, allowing users to benefit from a modernized UI.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Download the Dark Breeze theme and Wine Reset theme below. 
    1. Click on the links below. It will open in a new tab.
    2. In the browser, click “Save as..” or “Save Page as..” depending on your browser)
    3. If you are using Safari, in the Save window, at the ‘Format:’ section, choose ‘Page source’. In Firefox or Chrome, save it directly but remember to append ‘.reg’ at the end of the file if it’s missing. By default, the browser saves to the Downloads folder.
  2. Open Finder > Application and in the search bar, type ‘wineskin’. The search result will show the ‘Wineskin’ folder among other results.
  3. Open the ‘Wineskin’ folder and you will find the Zimmwriter app/wrapper.
  4. Right-click on the Zimmwriter app and click “Show Package Contents”.
  5. You will see a Wineskin app inside. Double-click on it.
  6. Click “Advanced” and then go to the ‘Tools’ tab.
  7. Click “Registry Editor (regedit)”.
  8. In the Registry Editor, in the menus, click “Registry > Import Registry File”.
  9. Click on the green up arrow and you will see the ‘users’ folder at the C: drive.
  10. Go into the users folder and then into the folder with your name or computer name. This will access your Mac folders.
  11. Go to ‘Downloads’ or where you had saved the ‘wine-breeze-dark.reg’ file and open the file.
  12. A pop-up will show that the keys and values in the reg file was successfully added to the registry. Click ‘OK’ and close all the windows. If you can’t close the Wineskin window, right-click on the wineskin icon in your Dock and press ‘Quit’.
  13. Relaunch Zimmwriter and now the dark mode should be active.
  14. To reset the theme back to the original, repeat the steps above and import the ‘wine-reset-theme.reg’ file into the Windows Registry.
